Police Commissioner gets WVYP on the Buses

Optare SoloWindle Valley Youth Project has secured a grant of £34,300 towards our project to create and run a mobile youth centre.  The money is coming from the Surrey Police and Crime Commissioner’s Community Safety Fund.

The idea for the mobile centre came from the work that we do around the Borough running clubs, providing support and mentoring, and helping young people have their voice heard.  Chief Executive Stefan Nahajski explains “we realised we needed to be able to respond better to where young people want us.  The bus will let us get to the places young people live so we can be there when they need us.”.   From the bus, we will offer a number of services including all ability sport, Internet access, sex and relationships education, drugs and alcohol advice, mental well-being support.  “We’ll listen to young people locally and work with them to create the services they want and need.”

Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Jeff Harris, a keen supporter of youth issues, commented, “I’m pleased to be working with WVYP on this project and having seen their work, know that they’ll use the grant and the bus to make a huge difference to young people where the need is highest”

“We’re really fortunate in Surrey Heath, because local youth work organisations work closely together” says Stefan.  “We’ve already got plans for how other groups are going to get involved in the project and really see the bus as a resource for the whole Borough”

We are busy recruiting the team of volunteers we will need to run the new venture including a team to manage the day to day upkeep and maintenance of the bus, drivers, sports coaches and youthwork helpers.  This is a great opportunity to get involved, to get all the benefits of volunteering and to learn some new skills.  (contact charlotte@wvyp.org.uk if you’re interested)

We are also looking for a small number of local companies to join the project as sponsors of different sessions that will run from the bus.  For more information about sponsorship, please contact Stefan Nahajski (stefan@wvyp.org.uk)
